In the beginning of looking at the Nash family, Asa's murder stood out. He was involved in many Oklahoma land transactions and owned land in an area known for oil drilling. Was this Black man killed for his land? Was his murder racially motivated? How could a Black farmer and postal contractor buy and sell so much land in Oklahoma? And aside from that, could his mother's origins be discovered?
So far, only one of those questions has been answered.

1913 Murdered
Asa Nash was shot and killed. He was arbitrating a disagreement between a renter and his neighbor on Asa's place in Creek County 10 miles W of Beggs. Renters were Jess Weatherbee and Clovis Stevenson. Weatherbee shot Asa killing him. The disagreement was over some damage to Weatherbee's corn field by Stevenson's hogs. The two sent for Asa to arbitrate and decide the damage. Asa's decision didn't suit Weatherbee and he started a row. Asa attempted to ride away when Weatherbee shot Asa with a 38 Winchester and then shot Asa's horse.
Asa Nash's death certificate, issued in Creek County OK, says he died
from of a gun shot wound on 25 Aug 1913. It is signed by Abram DuBose,
MD on 30 Aug 1913. The informant was Frank Nash of Beggs, OK, who was Asa's brother.
Murder of Asa Nash |
A reward was offered for the apprehension of Jess Weatherby who shot Asa Nash and killed him. I found no evidence that he was ever found.
