John Andrew Jackson, enslaved by Robert English

Joshua English was born 24 June 1701 in Moate, County Westmeath, Ireland and died 1 Jan 1771 in Camden, Kershaw, South Carolina. He was the son of William Thomas English 1667-1711 and Mary Polly Sharpe 1673-1711.  Joshua married Mary Holmes who was born 1705 in Ireland and died 1789 in Camden, Kershaw, South Carolina.  Joshua arrived in America 1753 and later was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War. Both Joshua and Mary are buried in the Quaker Cemetery in Camden, South Carolina.

Thomas English, son of Joshua English 1701-1771 and Mary Holmes 1705-1789, was born 1731 in Moate, County Westmeath, Ireland and died 1795 in Craven, Clarendon County, South Carolina. He married Margaret Flynn 1732-1793 who was the daughter of Edward Flynn 1692-1762 and Ann Martin 1720-1796.

Robert English, son of Thomas English 1731-1795 and Margaret Flynn, was born 13 June 1773 and died Dec 1847, both in Sumter County, South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Wilson 1779-1860.

James Wilson English, Son of Robert English 1773-1847 and Elizabeth Wilson 1779-1860, was born 27 Dec 1797 in Lynchburg, Lee County, South Carolina and died 31 Oct 1841 in Bishopville, Sumter County, South Carolina.  He married Mary Jane Bradley who was born 20 May 1801 in Sumter County, South Carolina and died 19 Sep 1875 in Bishopville, Sumter County, South Carolina.  She was the daughter of Roger Bradley 1754-1806 and Martha Mitchell.  [See separate blog post for much more on this Bradley family.]

Martha Mills English, daughter of Robert English 1773-1847 and Elizabeth Wilson 1779-1860, was born 16 Apr 1811 in Sumter County, South Carolina and died 1878 in Ozan, Hempstead County, Arkansas.  She married John Gamble McFaddin who was born 1806 in Sumter County, South Carolina and died 1861 in Ozan, Hempstead County, Arkansas.  He was the son of John M McFaddin 1782-1827 and Agnes Elizabeth Gamble 1789-1819.

James Bradley, Sr was born 1690 in Drumbo Parish, County Down, Ireland. He died 22 April 1775 in Salem, Black River, South Carolina.  He was the son of Joseph Bradley and Jane __ (md 2nd Burrows)  James married Mary Margaret Witherspoon 1697-1734

Samuel Bradley, Sr was born 6 Feb 1723 in Drumbo Parish, County Down, Ireland and died 13 Sep 1778 in Salem, Oconee, South Carolina.  He was the son of James Bradley, Sr 1690-1775 and Mary Margaret Witherspoon.  On 5 Feb 1750 Samuel married Elizabeth Mary Gordon who was born on 4 May 1730 and died 24 Nov 1804. She was the daughter of Roger Gordon, one of the original settlers of Williamsburg District.

Nevertheless... my Mother-in-law Mrs Elizabeth Witherspoon should have the use of my Negro woman named Lyda and her children during her natural life, if she chooses to do so.

On 23 May 1786 Henry Honaker and Charles Baker were appointed administrators of the estate of Joseph Baker.  David Sayers, James Crockett, Thompson Sayers and James Simpson were appointed to appraise the personal estate of Joseph Baker.

William Bourn  was born 23 August 1743 is Hanover County, VA and died 8 June 1768.  William married Rosamond "Rosa" Jones who was born 14 Feb 1750 and died 16 Mar 1821.  She was the daughter of Minitree Jones, Sr.  The Bourn and Jones families were early pioneers of Grayson County, VA.  

William and Rosamond had 9 children:

• Patience was born 18 Nov 1770 and married Jonathan Thomas
• Charity was born 7 Nov 1775 and married John Blair
  
• Milly was born 7 Mar 1776 and married Jesse McKinney. Milly and Jesse settled on the Ararat River near Mount Airy, Surry County, NC [see above Deed of Sale}
  
• Stephen was born 26 Feb 1779 and married Patsy Mays
• Mary was born 5 Jan 1782 and married Martin Dickinson
• Elizabeth was born 20 Mar 1785 and married Capt Lewis Hale
• Frances was born 5 June 1788 and married Stephen Hale, Sr
• Celia was born 25 Dec 1790 and married Robert Johnstone of Roaring River, Wilkes County, NC
• William was born 4 May 1794 and married Mary Johnstone of Roaring River, Wilkes County, NC

1775 Tax Lists for Louisa County, Virginia show William and his brother Stephen as "patrollers" who scouted the area looking for runaway slaves.

Purchase of enslaved - some time before William and his family moved to Grayson County, while William was in Richmond, VA, he purchased two enslaved women at a slave auction: Granny Beck and Amy (some believe Aimy was Granny Beck's daughter.)  Allegedly William gave Amy her freedom in his will:  "Amy has been a faithful, good servant and has raised for me 18 children. She is not to be sold or taken in in the divide. With his children she should be free to go where she pleased."  [Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County, Virginia by Benjamin Floyd Nuckolls, 1982]   This does not appear in his final will.
After Wm and Rosa died,  Amy went to Old Town to live with Mary Dickenson who owned her daughter Mourning. When Mary died she went to Elk Creek to Francis Hale who owned Winny another of her daughters. Amy died there, buried in Hale family cemetery.

Shelby Daniel House at 3537 Virginia Ave, Kansas City, Missouri

 

In 1905 Shelby Daniel had a house built for his family at 3537 Virginia Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.  74 years later my husband Gary and I purchased this home.  

116 years after Shelby built this house I would discover that he and I are 5th cousins.

Shelby's house is a Kansas City shirtwaist variant and was built by a builder, not architect designed, in what is now the Squire Park neighborhood.  

Squire Park was developed between 1887 and 1915 by James J Squier and his son-in-law Robert V Jones.  This neighborhood is considered an early streetcar suburb because of its development along the city's transportation lines.

The original owners of Squire Park homes were upper-middle class citizens of Kansas City: attorneys, successful entrepreneurs, presidents, vice-presidents and managers of various companies from automobiles and jewelry to lumber and iron.  Among the residents were high-ranking officials in the railroad industry, while others worked in more creative fields as arts and architects.

Shelby Daniel was born 29 Dec 1866 in Platte County, Missouri to Randall Richardson Daniel 1839-1917 and Susan Edwina Coons 1849-1938.  He married Margaret Emma "Maggie" Hunn/Huen 1868-1948.  He worked in the garment industry all of his professional life. Beginning in 1888 as a Clerk at Golden Eagle, then as a salesman at Boley Clothing Co.

By 1920 he owned his own business Daniel Clothing Co located at 201-205 Sharp Bldg.  Shelby died 24 September 1938 and is buried in the historic Elmwood Cemetery in Kansas City.

Enslaved of the Degraffenreid and Allied Families in South Carolina, Kentucky and Louisiana

 

1870 Census Chester County, South Carolina

This is a story of falling down a rabbit hole, so to speak.   A hint for Solomon Muldrow popped up on my Ancestry home page. Checking it out led to doing some FAN research on his family which led me to Degraffenreid.

Solomon Muldrow was born 15 May 1890 in Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas.  He was the son of Daniel Muldrow (enslaved) who was born about 1844 in South Carolina, died in Arkansas and Sallie Nelson or Green (enslaved) who was born about 1847 in South Carolina, died in Arkansas.

Solomon married #1 Julia Smith, #2 Earnesta Conway and #3 Sarah Jane Degraffenried.  Sarah Jane was born 28 Mar 1890 in South Carolina and died 1 May 1965 in Contra Costa County, California.  She was the daughter of George Degraffenreid (enslaved) born about 1843 in South Carolina and Lydia Degraffenreid (enslaved) who was born about 1851 in South Carolina and died 15 Sep 1927 in Chester County, South Carolina. 

Lydia was the daughter of Robert Degraffenreid (enslaved) who was born about 1821 in South Carolina and died 1917-1918 WWI and Merning / Morning Degraffenreid (enslaved) who was born about 1825 in Chester County, South Carolina. Both Robert and Merning/Morning have 1850 Slave Schedule hints from Ancestry and ownership is attributed to Thomas Degraffenreid. 

In 1870 Robert Degraffenreid (formerly enslaved) his wife and his 9 children - including Lydia - are living in Halsellville, Chester County, South Carolina. They're living next door to a white family:  Thomas B Carlisle, 42, his wife Mary E, 42, born in New York, T H Degraffenreid 13, and Annie Degraffenried 11.  

Bear with me.  Thomas Degraffenreid's brother Tscharner Hobson Degraffenreid married Mary Eaton Johnson who was formerly a governess and born in New York.  Tscharner died in 1860 and Mary Eaton Johnson Degraffenreid remarried to Thomas Carlisle.  The 1870 census finds her living next door to former slaves of her brother in law or her husband.

Thomas Degraffenreid was born 14 Apr 1815 in Chester County, South Carolina and died 25 Feb 1874.  he married #2 Belvidere "Belle" J Gott who was born Aug 1832 in Tennessee and died Mar 1914 in Savannah, Georgia.  #1 Phoebe Martha/Matilda Chisholm who was born 1816 and died 1856 in Chester County, South Carolina.

Though Ancestry indicates Thomas was the enslaver of Robert and Merning/Morning, because Tscherner is a Degraffenreid family name and others with that given name sometimes used "Thomas," I considered it could be either one of them. However, this particular Tscherner never used Thomas in any of the records I've found.

So I can't help but wonder if Sarah and her #2 husband received the enslaved Blacksmith from her husband's estate.] 

 

Regina Degraffenreid d/o of Allen Degraffenreid, Sr, was born 28 May 1799 in Chester County, South Carolina and died 19 April 1856 in Lowndes County, Mississippi.  She married Thomas Garton Blewett who was born 4 July 1789 in Blewett Falls, Anson County, North Carolina and died 2 May 1871 in Columbus, Lowndes, Mississippi. He was the son of Thomas Blewett and Amy Randle.

Sallie Cummings, Paulina Degraffenried

Paulina Degraffenreid,daughter of Allen Degraffenreid Sr, was born 1817 in Chester County, South Carolina and died 1899 in Collinsburg, Louisiana probably at her home Orchard Grove Plantation.  Paulina married twice. Both times to wealthy enslavers.  #1 James Belton Pickett with whom she lived with in Chester County, South Carolina.  Paulina married #2 James Blair Gilmer in South Carolina, but they moved to Louisana.  .  She and Gilmer did not actually divorce, but legally seperated all property, money, etc and lived seperately after about ten years of marriage.

James Belton Pickett, Paulina's first husband, was born 25 Oct 1803 in Chester County, South Carolina and died 4 Jun 1842 in Louisiana.  He was the son of John Raiford Pickett and Charlotte Belton.

John Belton Pickett, s/o Paulina Degraffenreid and James Belton Pickett, was born 21 July 1834 Chester County, South Carolina and died 1 Sep 1900 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana.  He married #1 Almira Turner Harrison and #2 Carrie Doles.

Sarah "Sallie" Allen Pickett, d/o Paulina Degraffenreid and James Belton Pickett, was born 21 July 1837 and died 7 Jun 1855, both in Bossier Parish, Louisiana.  She married Robert Campbell Cummings who was born 3 June 1811 in Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia and died 21 July 1892 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana.

Robert Campbell Cummings is listed in the 1850 Census Representative Dist 3, Orleans, LA. He listed with W A Smith, born about 1827, Overseer.  Robert's real estate is valued at $75,000 and his personal estate is valued at #111,600.  This certainly suggests he in an enslaver but I have not found him in the 1850 Slave Schedule.

James Blair Gilmer was the 2nd husband of Paulina Degraffenreid (d/o Allen Degraffenreid Sr.)  He was born 4 May 1814 in Christian County, Kentucky and died 8 Aug 1856 in Santo Espetentie, Holguin, Cuba while shopping property for sugar plantations.  He was the son of  George Oglethorpe Gilmer 1787-1849 and Martha Harvie Johnson 1797-1857.  James married #1 Eliza Lewis 1816-1839 and they had 3 daughters.  He married #2 Paulina Degraffenreid.  They had no children.

Testimony: Dr James W Vance swore he was dead. Heard via letter from American & European Hotel proprietor at Havannah, Island of Cuba.  James died at Santo Espetentie, 60-70 milies from Havannah from yellow fevor on 8 Aug 1856.

[Note:  In 1859 a partition of his estate divided his land given to daughters:  Buck Hall Plantation - 975 acres valued at $32,242 - to Mary Boutwell Gilmer;  Kingston Plantation - 1, 248 acres valued at $30,258 - to Martha George Gilmer; and Egypt Plantation - 3,540 acres valued at $30,873 - to Eliza Lewis Gilmer.]

[Note: In his lifetime he owned 13 Red River cotton plantations along with tanyards. He also owned a slate quarry near Little Rock, Arkansas on the Quachita River.  When James Blair Gilmer died a property partition of over 500 slaves was recorded in the Bossier Parish Conveyance records. A web search for him will result in much more information about his holdings.]
