Wow! I just found the Penicks in my Ancestry tree today. All of the enslaved people listed in William Penick's will are actually identified by Ancestry however, they do not download to the profile like his children do. Ancestry needs to fix this. When I find names of enslaved people I put them in the profile of the slaveowner, designating the slaveowner as "Guardian". That needs to be fixed to. As part of the US finally accepting that slavery did happen means full recognition here, too. I will check the efforts with whom you work that account for enslaved people.
ReplyDeleteAgain, Dyan, to my knowledge I'm not related to this family. I was searching Saunders for a friend and noticed that Matthew Nelson was a witness in Judith Walker's will. He is one of my great grandfathers. I totally agree with you! I do not like using Guardian at all. I find it offensive and Ancestory needs to step up and add another/other categories of relationships. AND when a document has been transcribed by them and list enslaved, then those names should go right along with the document and be listed on the profile when saving the document! Heading to Ancestry to hopefully invite you to my tree. You'll find more info that I haven't blogged about. Sue
