UPDATE
William Bourn was born 23 August 1743 is Hanover County, VA and died 8 June 1768. William married Rosamond "Rosa" Jones who was born 14 Feb 1750 and died 16 Mar 1821. She was the daughter of Minitree Jones, Sr. The Bourn and Jones families were early pioneers of Grayson County, VA.
William and Rosamond had 9 children:
- Patience was born 18 Nov 1770 and married Jonathan Thomas
- Charity was born 7 Nov 1775 and married John Blair
- Milly was born 7 Mar 1776 and married Jesse McKinney. Milly and Jesse settled on the Ararat River near Mount Airy, Surry County, NC [see above Deed of Sale}
- Stephen was born 26 Feb 1779 and married Patsy Mays
- Mary was born 5 Jan 1782 and married Martin Dickinson
- Elizabeth was born 20 Mar 1785 and married Capt Lewis Hale
- Frances was born 5 June 1788 and married Stephen Hale, Sr
- Celia was born 25 Dec 1790 and married Robert Johnstone of Roaring River, Wilkes County, NC
- William was born 4 May 1794 and married Mary Johnstone of Roaring River, Wilkes County, NC
1775 Tax Lists for Louisa County, Virginia show William and his brother Stephen as "patrollers" who scouted the area looking for runaway slaves.
Purchase of enslaved - some time before William and his family moved to Grayson County, while William was in Richmond, VA, he purchased two enslaved women at a slave auction: Granny Beck and Amy (some believe Aimy was Granny Beck's daughter.) Allegedly William gave Amy her freedom in his will: "Amy has been a faithful, good servant and has raised for me 18 children. She is not to be sold or taken in in the divide. With his children she should be free to go where she pleased." [Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County, Virginia by Benjamin Floyd Nuckolls, 1982] This does not appear in his final will.
After Wm and Rosa died, Amy went to Old Town to live with Mary Dickenson who owned her daughter Mourning. When Mary died she went to Elk Creek to Francis Hale who owned Winny another of her daughters. Amy died there, buried in Hale family cemetery.

Thank you for two things - 1) referring to your blog in your profile on Ancestry.com and 2) posting this deed of sale. I am a black woman who has defended from William Bourne through a child, Violet Blair, he had with an enslaved woman whose name I think is Margaret. Can you share this document with me? I can be found on Ancestry.com as Dyan Bryson. The Hale (Hail) witnesses are also in my tree and are linked to the incidents described in the book and movie "Children of the Flower Moon" as well as the Tulsa Race Massacre - not proud of these relatives, I must say.
ReplyDeleteKeep up your efforts. I am addicted!
My GEDmatch kit is AX6860628 - I am experienced with Ancestry and very new to GEDmatch
Regards,
Dyan
Hi Dyan! Glad you found me. Unfortunately, because this Bourn family is not mine, I did not save a copy of this document. I *think* it is from Cavaliers and Pioneers. When I find a bunch of deeds or wills naming the enslaved (while doing my own family research) I collect the data to share. I do remember (after checking Ancestry's deeds for Grayson County) this is from a transcription published in a book/periodical. Sorry! So your ancestor Violet was enslaved by Charity Blair. Along with Winny, too. I've just located William Bourn's info in my work notes and will be adding his will to this post. I'll look for you on Ancestry and invite you to my tree. I did just check on GEDmatch and we match on 2 chromosones. Chr 15 3.1 cM 297 SNPs and Chr 21 4 cM 355 SNPs. I have deep roots in Virginia and having not seen your tree, I have no idea where our match may be. Moving on to your other comment. Again, glad we've connected! Sue
DeleteThanks so much for following up to my comment. Thanks for your additional research on the Bourn's, especially as they are not in your tree. You have been generous in sharing quite a bit of helpful information, thank you! Please do look for me on Ancestry. I. look forward to understanding where we match up. I need to dome the work to learn GEDmatch. Above, spellcheck corrected my poor typing. Instead of "defended" I meant "descended". Violet is my great great grandmother whom I knew nothing about until doing research on Ancestry. The information you shared helped me get to know her a bit more. Yes, I am so glad we connected, too!
DeleteYou're so welcome. Though our dna connection is small and waaay back there... I don't discount it and would like to figure it out. I just re-sent the Ancestry invitation to my tree and then looked more carefully at yours. My direct ancestors who were enslavers were few (all on my paternal side) and nothing jumps out at me tree-wise. I do think that since Violet was not the daughter of Amy/Aimy, then I suspect Violet's mother Margaret was probably the daughter of Amy/Aimy. Simply given the number of enslaved William Bourn had and Aimy had 18 children. Let's stay in touch. suekottwitz(at)gmail.com
